License Installation

To be able to use MaxBack, you must have a valid license file installed.

A distinction is made between two license files:

• Activation license
• Instance license

You receive the activation license together with the software. Instance licenses are only valid for one MaxBack installation and are created either using the procedure described below or via our support team.

You can use the activation license file to request new licenses yourself at any time:

Online activation

1. Copy the activation license file to the MaxDB database host and install MaxBack (see also http://docs.maxback.io/docs/latest/vsswriter/installation/install.html).
   
   
2. Execute the command

   maxback.vssclient instlicense -f <path to the license file>

   Replace <path to license file> with the file path of the license file.

An instance license file is now automatically generated via the dbosoft license server, provided the MaxDB database computer can reach the license server via the Internet.

Offline activation

If online activation is not possible due to network restrictions, you can use the activation license to manually request an instance license:

1. Install MaxBack (see also http://docs.maxback.io/docs/latest/vsswriter/installation/install.html).
2. Execute the command

   maxback.vssclient getkey

   Copy the instance key issued.
   
   
3. Log in to https://my.dbosoft.eu. If you do not yet have an account here, you can create a new one at any time.
   
   
4. Click on the “Request offline license” tile on the start page.
   The license request wizard opens in the right-hand window area.
   
   
5. Upload the activation license file using the “Upload Activation License” button. After validation, click on “Next”.
   
   
6. Fill in the input fields as follows:
   Edition: Standard (Trial only if you are still using an evaluation license)
   Version: 3.x
   Instance Key: the instance key that you determined above
   Instance Name: any name to identify the host, e.g. the host name.
   
   
7. Click Next and download the instance license file you have created.
   
   
8. Copy the instance license file to the MaxDB database host.
   
   
9. Execute the command

   maxback.vssclient instlicense -f <path to license file> 

   Replace <Path to License File> with the file path of the license file.

Download activation license / Request temporary license

At https://my.dbosoft.eu you can download your activation license file or purchase new licenses at any time.

The prerequisite is that you are already assigned to your organization (as Owner or License Admin).

1. Log in at https://my.dbosoft.eu. If you do not yet have an account, please proceed as described under “Emergency license without activation license file”.
   
   
2. Click on the “Licenses of <Org Name>” tile to open the license management.
   
   
3. Click on the product “MaxBack VSS Writer”.

In the license management you have the following options:

• Download the activation license file for online and offline activation as described above.
• Request new test licenses (“Add Trial” button)
• For standard licenses: Order new licenses online
• For subscriptions: Cancel the subscription or adjust the subscription (only for subscriptions purchased online).

Emergency license without activation license file

If you urgently need a license due to a malfunction but do not have access to the activation license file or access to the customer organization, you can request a temporary license file under a new customer number at any time.

1. To do this, click on the Download button at https://maxback.io/downloads. A dialog box will appear in which you enter your name and e-mail address.
   
   
2. You will receive an e-mail to confirm your e-mail address. Click on the confirmation link in the e-mail.
   
   
3. Indicate in the chatbot that you require a license.

After creating your account, the order process for a temporary license will start automatically. You can request up to 10 temporary licenses in this way.
